I can sit and watch the birds for hours.
Laying on a blanket of grass,
some strawberries, almonds, and chocolate
spread across grandma's old quilt,
sunglasses resting on my face,
my eyes looking up to the ocean blue sky.
Waiting,
observing,
patient
for the voyage of the red tailed hawk
or the adventurous trails
of a pack of twenty geese.
Cardinals, blue jays, hummingbirds, and doves
all content in their solitude.
Simply sitting on branches,
with no destination,
in no need of company -
singing because they want to
not just for someone to listen.
Birds are interesting that way
they mirror self-reliance
yet when returning
on their passage home,
they're rarely ever alone.
